When the monsoon settles in over the Klang Valley, drains and gutters suddenly have to move far more water than usual. Small issues you'd normally ignore — a slightly slow drain, a loose gutter bracket, a bit of debris on the roof — become the reason your floor floods at 2am. The good news is that most rainy-season plumbing trouble is preventable with a short checklist.
Clear your drains and gutters first
Leaves, silt and general debris are the number-one cause of overflow during downpours. Before the wettest months, clear out roof gutters, balcony outlets and external floor drains so water has a clear path away from the building. If water pools even in light rain, that's a sign the drain is already partly blocked.
Quick checks you can do yourself
- Pour a bucket of water down each outdoor drain and watch how fast it clears.
- Look for standing water around the house after rain — it points to a blockage or poor fall.
- Check that gutter downpipes actually discharge into a drain, not against a wall.
Watch the low points of your home
Ground-floor bathrooms, kitchen yards and car porches are usually the first places to flood. Make sure floor traps in these areas aren't clogged with hair or grease, and that any sump pump you rely on is working before you actually need it.
Don't ignore small leaks now
A joint that weeps slightly in dry weather can let go completely under the extra pressure of a storm-fed system. If you already know about a dripping connection or a patch of damp, the pre-monsoon period is the ideal time to have it repaired — while it's still a small job.
When to call a professional
If drains back up repeatedly, if water rises through a floor trap during rain, or if you can't find where water is getting in, it's worth having a technician inspect the system with a drain camera. Recurring problems usually have a single root cause that's cheaper to fix than to keep mopping up after.
